Every once in a while, during my time consulting with various companies, I hear excuses about why a certain website doesn’t need a blog, or why it doesn’t make sense to have one.
There aren’t enough content ideas, the content for this niche would be boring, and so on and so on. Every time I hear these excuses, I have to go take time and explain all the benefits of having a blog, and more importantly, examples of competitors within the niche that are blogging with great success.
Your Niche May Be Boring, But Your Content Doesn’t Have To Be
So let’s take a look at a niche that might sound a little dry, and we’ll go through a few examples of sites that are doing it right, and sites that are doing it wrong.
One Day Car Insurance

A quick look at the navigation bar shows us that there is no link to a blog. However, in my last post I wrote about how simple it is to find content topics to write about. Just spending three minutes researching, here are a couple informative topics that would be great to write about:
- 7 Best Car Insurance Commercials
- Why Is Car Insurance So Expensive For Men?
- Geico vs Progressive (Or really any other car insurance company comparison)
- 5 Most Expensive Car To Insure
I could really go all day, but we’ll just stop there for now. Some of those articles actually sound really interesting. I’m sure I would read them.
Now let’s look at an example of an insurance blog that’s actually doing it right.
Life Happens

Now these guys have the right idea! First off, if you look at their home page, you see that one of their blog posts is featured in their slider. In the navigation bar you will also see a link to their blog, for easy access to their great content.
When we take a look at their blog, we can see that there is a great mix of content, with posts every few days. There are nice pictures, bulleted lists, and even a few videos.

Another great aspect of their blog is the ease of social sharing, with easily accessible social icons. In order for your content to have a chance at going viral, it’s important that the content is extremely easy to share. The easier it is to share, the more likely it is to go viral.

Don’t Miss Out On The Benefits Of Blogging
While these are just a couple examples, it makes it really easy to see the big difference between a site that leverages the great power of a blog and one that is missing the boat. I’m sure that Life Happens is able to bring in quite a bit of long-tail traffic just through the blog posts it does. And that doesn’t even count the loyal readership that they’re able to build up through frequent posting.
There really is no excuse for not having a blog on your site and enjoying the benefits that it brings! Do you have any additional examples of sites that have great blogs even though they are in a tough niche? What about sites that need to be called out for not having a blog when they need to?
