Best Directing
The 93rd Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars 2023, honored the best films and performances of the year.
In a thrilling night, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once took away one of the most coveted awards: Best Directing. The duo beat tough competition from Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, Todd Field’s Tár and Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness.
Best Actor in a Leading Role
The coveted prize for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Oscars 2023 was awarded to Brendan Fraser for his role in The Whale. Audiences were enthralled with Fraser’s emotional performance, which saw him transform from a humble fisherman into an unlikely hero of the high seas. His stirring delivery and powerful storytelling struck a chord with viewers around the world, making it an easy choice for Oscar voters.
Austin Butler also made an impression with his turn as Elvis Presley in the biopic of the same name. Butler perfectly captured Elvis’ swagger and charisma, portraying him both as a beloved entertainer and flawed human being. His portrayal reached the hearts of many who had loved Elvis over the years, bringing back fond memories of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Colin Farrell was equally impressive in The Banshees of Inisherin, playing a ruthless Irish gangster on a mission to reclaim his turf. His gripping and intense performance earned him plenty of recognition from Academy voters and saw him nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Paul Mescal’s portrayal of a young man struggling with his faith in Aftersun earned him an Oscar nod as well, while Bill Nighy’s heartfelt part as a lonely old man who finds solace in unexpected places in Living touched many hearts, making it one of the most memorable performances of the year.
Ultimately though, it was Brendan Fraser who emerged triumphant with his powerful and moving performance, bringing him his first Oscar win and cementing his place among the greats of Hollywood.
Best Actress in Leading Role
The 93rd Academy Awards presented the much-coveted golden statue to five talented actresses, with one standing out as the eventual winner. This year’s Best Actress in a Leading Role went to Michelle Yeoh for her outstanding performance in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.
Yeoh fought off stiff competition from Cate Blanchett, who starred in ‘Tár’, Ana de Armas for her role in ‘Blonde’, Andrea Riseborough for ‘To Leslie’ and Michelle Williams for ‘The Fabelmans’.
Yeoh was overwhelmed when she accepted the award on stage, thanking her co-stars, director, family and fans.
In her speech she said: “Never give up,” and dedicated her award to “all the moms in the world.” — then going on to say “They are really the superheroes, and without them, none of us would be here tonight,”
With her win tonight, Yeoh joins an elite group of actors who have won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role – making history as the first Asian actor ever to do so. She took home not only the gold statuette but also a legacy that will last forever.
