Timberwolves Shock Lakers Despite Dončić’s 37-Point Explosion

The Minnesota Timberwolves delivered a stunning statement in their playoff opener, dismantling the Los Angeles Lakers 117-95 on Sunday despite Luka Dončić’s impressive 37-point performance. The sixth-seeded Timberwolves silenced the roaring Los Angeles crowd and seized home-court advantage with a dominant showing that exposed serious concerns for the star-studded Lakers, according to Yahoo Sports.

In what was supposed to be a triumphant homecoming for the third-seeded Lakers—their first playoff series opener at home with a full building since 2012—Minnesota crashed the party with a barrage of three-pointers and stifling defense that left LeBron James and company searching for answers.

From Promising Start to Complete Collapse

The Lakers initially rode the energy of their enthusiastic home crowd to an early advantage, with Dončić torching the Timberwolves for 16 points in an explosive first quarter. Los Angeles built a seven-point lead after the opening period, giving their fans reason for optimism.

That optimism quickly evaporated during a disastrous second quarter that completely flipped the game. Minnesota outscored the Lakers 38-20 in that pivotal period, seizing control through superior ball movement, deadly outside shooting, and disciplined defense.

“Minnesota weathered Dončić’s 16-point first quarter in front of a roaring LA crowd then took control with a 38-20 second quarter and poured it on after halftime, showcasing their veteran poise and playoff experience,” noted Yahoo Sports in their recap of the game.

The Timberwolves never looked back after claiming the lead, extending their advantage to as many as 27 points in the second half. The Lakers failed to trim the deficit to single digits at any point after the disastrous second quarter.

Three-Point Barrage Overwhelms Lakers’ Defense

Minnesota’s perimeter shooting proved to be the decisive factor in this lopsided contest. The Timberwolves connected on a franchise playoff-record 21 three-pointers on 42 attempts, with many of those shots coming on wide-open looks that highlighted glaring issues in the Lakers’ defensive rotations.

Jaden McDaniels led the Minnesota attack with 25 points, while Sixth Man of the Year Naz Reid added 23 points including six three-pointers. The Lakers had no answer for either player as their defensive schemes repeatedly broke down.

Anthony Edwards narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with 22 points, nine assists and eight rebounds despite shooting just 8-of-22 from the field. Julius Randle was equally effective from beyond the arc, with both he and Edwards knocking down four three-pointers apiece.

Superstar Duo Struggles to Find Chemistry

While Dončić dazzled with 37 points on efficient 54.5% shooting and grabbed eight rebounds, his partnership with LeBron James showed concerning signs of disconnect, according to Bleacher Report.

James contributed 19 points and five rebounds but shot a modest 8-of-18 from the field. More troubling was the duo’s playmaking struggles—they combined for just four assists against nine turnovers, a shocking statistic for two of the NBA’s premier facilitators.

Outside of Austin Reaves, who chipped in 16 points, no other Laker managed to reach double figures in scoring. This lack of supporting production placed tremendous pressure on the team’s stars and made the Lakers’ offense predictable and easier to defend.

Fans and franchise legends voiced their disappointment with the team’s performance on social media, particularly highlighting the lack of chemistry between James and Dončić, who joined the Lakers just two months ago at the trade deadline.

Experience Versus Star Power

The game showcased a stark contrast between Minnesota’s playoff-tested cohesion and the Lakers’ still-developing chemistry. The Timberwolves, coming off last season’s run to the Western Conference Finals, displayed the confidence and execution of a team with clear identity and established roles.

“While the Lakers are still searching for chemistry after acquiring Dončić two months ago, Minnesota are eager to improve on last season’s run to the Western Conference finals,” observed Yahoo Sports.

Minnesota’s balanced attack and disciplined defense stymied the Lakers’ offense beyond their star players. The Timberwolves forced the Lakers into difficult shots throughout the game while generating high-percentage opportunities on the offensive end.

Game 2 becomes crucial for the Lakers, who must now adjust quickly to avoid falling into an 0-2 hole before the series shifts to Minnesota. For the Timberwolves, the emphatic victory provides a psychological edge and the comfort of knowing they’ve already accomplished their minimum goal of stealing home-court advantage.

The teams will meet again Tuesday night in Los Angeles for Game 2 of this best-of-seven first-round series.
