Before the release of the NES, Nintendo’s founder, Sekiryo Kaneda, founded Marufuku Co., Ltd. to distribute Nintendo cards. Despite the company’s massive debt, Kaneda had two daughters, one of whom was a toy engineer named Gunpei Yokoi. He later changed his name to Shikanojo Yamauchi after his father died. Yamauchi eventually abandoned his family and focused on the business, which would become a global phenomenon. His son, Hiroshi Yamauchi, was raised by his grandparents and eventually took over the company.

During the 1970s, Nintendo’s focus shifted to arcades, launching the Laser Clay Shooting System, based on the technology behind Kousenjuu toys. After initial success with the Laser Clay Shooting System, the company created more light gun games and arcade machines. Unfortunately, these arcade machines eventually closed due to their high costs. Nintendo found a new market in the 1970s when it secured the rights to the Magnavox Odyssey video game console.

The company’s success in the 1970s grew out of a successful partnership with Disney. While the partnership with Disney was a huge success, Nintendo struggled for several years to remain competitive in the Japanese toy industry. Today, it’s now become one of the most successful video game companies of all time, while also being solely responsible for the Super Mario Brothers and Legend of Zelda franchises, which are still being released in new forms today.
