Are you a blogger or writer who wants to take your writing to the next level? While there are some traits that great writers have, this can vary depending on who you ask, whether you are a publisher or a business owner, and what characteristics are needed to help you reach your goals. Even if you don’t feel you are a great writer, or lack the education to properly write, there are plenty of grammar checking tools that can help you in the process.
But there are still standards that great writers have in common. Below we have list seven of an essential qualities of good writers and bloggers. Keep it handy to refer to as you build your blogging audience.
1. Ability to write concise, engaging copy
If you think about the blogs that you may have read that were the most engaging, the blogger usually has a high ability to write clear, concise copy that engages the audience for which it is intended. Some writers and writing styles appeal more to some people than others. The key is knowing your audience and writing the kind of content that they value.
2. Sense of humor
Even on corporate blogs, people read blogs partly to be entertained. They want a break from their regular work or are in search of some interesting and funny copy to take their mind off their problems. So, if you have a natural sense of humor, use it in your blog when you can. Don’t overdo it. But the proper use of humor in the right places can increase your audience.
3. Good grasp of grammar rules
Good writers and bloggers all have a good grasp of grammar rules. There are times to deviate from the rules, but it’s important that you adhere to the basic grammar, punctuation, and usage rules so that your communication is clear.
4. Ability to connect to your audience
If you are going to be successful as a blogger, you have to be able to connect to your audience. Creating valuable content and helping your readers solve some of their problems is one way to create value for your target audience. If you own a website or business, you can conduct surveys to find out what your readers want to hear about and focus your content on that.
5. Understanding of writing with a purpose
Purposeful writing involves thinking about what your goals are for your blog posts and sticking to your purpose. If it is to inform people about a topic, focus on the information that you are sharing with them. If it is to sell your products or the products of an affiliate, focus on how the product will help them.
6. Looking at things from a unique perspective
Good bloggers are also able to look at the same topic from a variety of unique perspectives or repurpose a topic in a way that brings a fresh approach.
7. Ability to summarize and create thoughtful endings
Shakespeare once said that the beginning of something is the most important. But his endings were always earth shattering and profound. I think Shakespeare also valued a good ending. If you are a blogger, think about a “takeaway” that you can offer readers in your final paragraph. It’s likely what they will remember most.
