The most important part of any web site or blog is to make sure you have a great domain name. The domain name of your site is what your content is going to be all about.
For example, my other web site has the name “BloggingTips.com” and the basis of all the content on the site is around “blogging” and “wordpress” “tips”. So when you here the name of the site, you pretty much know what type of content you are expecting to get.
Then on my other main blog, the name is “ZacJohnson.com” – This site is all about me and how to make money online. I’ve been making money online for 18 years now, so it’s basically a site of everything I have done over the years to make money myself, while also offering guides and content to other readers to help them do the same.
Lastly, you might have a site like “Twitter.com” – the name has nothing to do with the site or the service… but it stuck and has become quite the brandable name.
So now you have three different ways to come up with a domain name for your site.
- Keywords that describe your site content
- Your personal or business name
- Some random word or phrase
No matter what type of site you are going to create, I highly recommend that you register your personal name as your domain name. If you don’t someone else is going to eventually grab it. Once a domain name is taken, it’s extremely hard and expensive to get back!
I also recommend that you always try and get the .COM version of a domain name. They are much more memorable, professional and valuable if you were to try and sell your site.
The next time you are thinking about starting a site and picking a domain name, think about the direction you want to go with the site and pick a domain name that is right for you.
