Wondering how bloggers make their money? Google AdSense is the answer. There’s no blogger out there that wouldn’t love to make money off his blog even if their initial intentions weren’t to make money from it. Bloggers are always looking for ways to monetize their blogs and Google AdSense is one of the surest ways to achieve it.

However, before you jump at this opportunity to make money from your blog, you must know that Google AdSense is not a get rich quick scheme. Do not expect to start making pennies talk more of real cash immediately. It takes a while before one even starts seeing a few dollars from this platform but rest assured it pays off in the long run.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way. What really is Google AdSense?

What is Google Adsense?

Google AdSense is a program run by Google that allows publishers in the Google network of content sites to serve automatic text, image, video or interactive media advertisements that are targeted to site content and audience. This program gives both bloggers and website owners an opportunity to make money by displaying Google ads. These advertisements are usually administered, sorted and maintained by Google. If you take note, these ads are usually displayed all over the place even in Google search results.

The main purpose of Google AdSense is to help generate revenue and profits for both advertisers and publishers. Although Google gets the largest cut and you get a small percentage, it’s still a win-win situation. There are two ways to make money from Google AdSense; it either generates revenue on a per-click or per-impression basis.

  • Impressions: this is based on the number of pageviews per month or the number of posts with ads.
  • Clicks: this is simply based on the number of people that click on the ads. (Under no circumstance should you click on your own ad.)

The major way to earn from Google AdSense is by getting clicks on your published AdSense advertisement units or by getting a thousand impressions.

Who is Eligible to Join Adsense?

Before we get into how to set up Google AdSense for your blog, it is important to know that not every blog or website owner is eligible for this program. You need to meet the following qualifications before you can make use of Google AdSense:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Should be a paid blog
  • Should have more than 25000 viewers per month
  • Have a postal address for which you receive bank statements.
  • Your website must comply with all the AdSense policies. Those policies do change from time to time, so reading the policies before submitting your application is important and will save you a lot of time and hassle in the future.
  • You must have owned your site for a minimum of six months before submitting an application for AdSense.

Most importantly you must reside in a country where there is a strong tax policy. This is because taxes must be paid on all revenues that are earned from your AdSense account. Although AdSense account holders are not required to be registered in the US, this strict tax requirement is in place. There are strict requirements for those from India for instance who would love to participate in the AdSense program.

How to Get Started Google Adsense?

With the above requirements, you can easily know if you’re eligible to have an AdSense account or not. However, if you’re eligible, how do you get started?

To make it as simple as possible, what you need to do is to sign up for an AdSense account and add the code you will receive to your blog or website. When submitting your application, you must specify what your website is all about and the products/services offered. This way you can choose how your ads look, where they show up, and even what kind of ads you’ll accept.

If you use blogger.com it is pretty easy to set up your AdSense account. All you need to do is click on the monetize tab to setup and manage an AdSense account. If you’re using a self-hosted WordPress platform, you can visit the AdSense website and apply for an account. After submitting your application you will receive a code that you can place anywhere you choose on your website or make it easier by using a plugin to help you place it on your site.

However that if you’re making use of a free WordPress account, you cannot use AdSense, but you can use WordAds if you have your own custom domain. (One of the numerous reasons why having a self-hosted WordPress is better.)

Take note that Google doesn’t pay out every dollar that comes into your AdSense account. They only pay out when you have a minimum of a 100$ in your account. Google will then send you a paper check or make a direct deposit into your bank account.

How Much Can I Make with Google Adsense?

Do not be fooled by all the images of AdSense large checks and all the fake stories circulating around the internet of people earning thousands of dollars per month from AdSense. In reality, AdSense or any other PPC (pay per click) program for that matter can be likened to a tree where you plant a seed and diligently water it for years before reaping the fruits. Under the reality of how much traffic you’re getting and the average CPC (cost per click) on your site.

The bottom line is that it is going to take a long time and a ton of traffic on your site before you start making money from AdSense but one thing is sure you will get there.

A lot of people usually run out of patience when they’ve got the code up to a month or two without getting as much a penny from AdSense. However, one thing they forget is that AdSense is not a get rich quick scheme like I mentioned earlier. If your aim is to get a PPC program that will pay immediately you put the code up on your site, then AdSense may not be for you. And frankly speaking, there’s no program that pays instantly in case you’re looking. If such a program exists, I assure you every blogger out there will be using it.

In order to earn $1000 per month, you need to have a site with page impressions of 7000 per day. This may not look realistic, but there are plenty of sites that actually surpass this amount of traffic, CPC and CTR (click through rate) which automatically means they make a handsome income. A site that has up to 1 million page views per month can earn approximately $5000 per month but for an individual publisher, it may take you up to 6 years to build a site that can get you 1 million impressions per month. So you see it is not an easy task, but a possible one.

How can I Make Even More from AdSense?

If you want to speed things up and earn more from AdSense then you will need to increase the number of ad clicks on your site. And one proven way of doing that is to increase your search traffic. People usually turn to search engines like Google and Bing when they need to solve a problem or have questions they need answers to. Take for example you have a post that provides a solution to a particular problem, making use of SEO (Search Engine Optimization,) will help your post rank better in search results. SEO will also help AdSense put up relevant ads on your blog posts, so that way when people click on your blog posts, the ads may assist them further in finding a solution to their problem. The result is more ad clicks.

Example:

Take for instance you write a post about the side effects or the health risks of Coolsculpting and you use search engine optimization (SEO) to give Google an idea of what your post is talking about. When someone searches for “coolsculpting side effects” and your post comes up, AdSense automatically knows what the post is about and therefore displays an ad within the post that says something like “Safe coolsculpting services in New York.”

If the person’s problem is finding the safest place for coolsculpting, he/she is most likely to click on that ad, which further solves their problem.

What You Need to Know About AdSense

  1. Never click on your own ad. In case nobody has ever told you, Google knows everything and they can tell when a person is clicking his own ads. Do not be tempted to do this because you will get banned from using the program.
  2. Do not tell friends or family to click your ads. Like I said earlier, Google knows everything. They will figure it out. Nobody knows how they know but they do. Just don’t do it because you will get banned from AdSense. Don’t believe me, try it.
  3. Pay attention to your ad clicks. If you have an average of 2 clicks per month and suddenly starts getting a 100 in a day, then something is wrong and you can get banned for that even though you didn’t do anything.
  4. Never rely on AdSense as your sole income source. It doesn’t matter if you’re making thousands of dollars per month from AdSense, always have an alternative way of making money from your website, just in case something triggers Google’s no-no sensors.
  5. Do not use more than 3 ad blocks on a single page. Google allows a maximum of 3 ad blocks on a page. It is also important not to plaster ads all over your site if not you risk annoying your regular readers and you don’t want that.

Hopefully, this post has given you an overview of what AdSense is and how it works. Remember, however, that AdSense it is not about the penny you make today but the years of online presence and continuous content update you make to reach your targeted earnings.
