Why HR Managers Should Start a Human Resources Blog in 2020

The human resources department plays an important role in every company. HR managers ensure that companies hire the right people for jobs, play an important role in shaping company culture, and can help mediate work disputes.

Despite the important role they play, it isn’t unusual for some HR workers to feel like they’re stuck in a behind-the-scenes role at work.

Do you want to do something proactive to help your business? Are you ready to demonstrate your value to people at your company and the candidates you may hire?

If so, consider starting a human resources blog.

Blogging as a business isn’t anything new, but some human resources professionals are writing blog posts for the first time. The right blog post can be part of a PR campaign, tie into a marketing campaign, or even serve as a tool for recruiting.

If the idea of running HR blogs appeals to you, we’re here to help.

Here are some solid reasons you should start an HR blog for your company.

1. Humanize Your Company

If anyone knows about company culture, it’s the HR manager. You know your company inside and out, understand the structure of each team, and see everyone as real people with emotions and needs and not just another employee.

You may have this intimate insight into your company, but unfortunately, your candidates don’t.

Your new candidates are going to see your company as something new with mysterious inner workers. They don’t know any true details about your team or yourself. That could lead to difficult or intimidating interviews or even a lack of interest in certain roles.

A blog can do a lot to add some personality to your business. The right posts can help people pair some names and faces to big job titles, and it’ll make it much easier for people to see your company as approachable and appealing.

Instead of hoping that your unique company culture will come through during a high-pressure interview, give people the chance to learn about it through content.

Write about yourself and your team and encourage other managers in different departments to do the same.

2. Give Candidates Information Upfront

Most employers will want potential job candidates to come into interviews with a basic understanding of the company. However, it can be difficult for candidates to learn about your company if there isn’t a lot of information available.

Unless your website takes the time to highlight certain projects and products, unique company culture, and other important information, some candidates will walk into an interview without knowing anything that matters!

Not being able to learn enough could also negatively affect the number of applicants you get for a position. They may be reluctant to apply if they can’t get a feel for your company. You could easily end up losing a great applicant, or worse, lose them to a competitor.

A good HR blog can give great talent all the help they need to get a feel for your company. They’ll be able to better gauge if they’re a good fit and can learn information that gets them excited to apply for your company.

Blogs are also a great way to show off some “soft” benefits you may not include in employment packages. Let them know that freelance employees have access to a company approved paystub generator they can use around tax time. Show them that your internal teams love to go to happy hours.

3. Improve SEO

Do you feel like you don’t have enough eyes on your job posts? Have you been wondering why you’re seeing fewer candidates for a usually popular job description?

If you want to increase the number of views on job posts and also give your marketing team a little help, consider writing blog posts to improve SEO.

Search engine optimization (SEO) helps webpages rank higher in search engine results. One of the best ways to improve SEO for your company is to write well-written content that’s optimized for SEO.

To optimize your posts for SEO the right way, do a little keyword research.

Think about what your ideal candidate may be entering into search engines and job sites to find employment postings. For more confirmation that these are popular search terms, consider using a free keyword research tool like the one from Google to ensure that your chosen keywords have a high search volume.

When you find the right keyword, make sure to include it in your blog’s headline and the metadata. Also, feel free to include keywords throughout your post and add internal links to your website to drive traffic to other places.

4. Improve Your Recruiting Methods

Have you ever wondered if certain benefits appealed the most to your candidates? Are you curious about if there’s a significant interest in one job in a department over another?

Blog posts can help reveal all of that information and more!

If you schedule each post to have a specific focus on a certain area of hiring, you can gauge people’s interest by looking at content analytics like page views and the time they spent on a page.  After a while, you may even be able to find better keywords to put in your job posts depending on how well certain blogs perform.
