What is Freelance Writing and How Does It Work?

Did you know that over 57 million people were working as freelance workers in the USA in 2019? Thanks to the growing online gig economy, more people than ever are able to leverage their skills online rather than ín a local workplace.

Do you dream of becoming a freelance worker? Maybe you have a skill like writing that you have always wanted to develop?

If you are asking yourself “what is freelance writing?” and “how do I get into it?”, read on.

What Do you Want to Write About?

So you want to be a writer? What do you want to write about? Unfortunately for many writers, this is the first obstacle.

You may have the passion and the ability to put words on a page. However, without a niche, you may not be able to build a career.

To find the answer to this question, look back at your life and see what experience you have. What can you write about?

Perhaps you have traveled extensively and can draw on your experience of different cultures. Or perhaps you did not travel, but you worked in an office for 20 years. Can you write about software?

Freelance writers create blog articles, social media posts, press releases, and magazine articles. There is a potential niche in every circumstance.

If you want to know how to start freelance writing, start with what you know, and start writing.

Start Your Portfolio

After you have started to write, you will need to build your portfolio. These are the articles that you will show to potential clients.

On the basis of these articles, they will decide whether to hire you or not. No pressure!

How do you start a portfolio? You could start your own blog on your website. You could also guest-post for free on another site. Or you can write articles and simply retain them for your portfolio.

This may not be the most profitable point of your writing career, however, portfolio articles are a great chance to advertise your ability and apply what you have learned so far in your career.

Get Yourself Out There!

Your next step is to get your name and portfolio before the eyes of as many potential clients as possible.

To be able to do this you will need an online presence. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, they all offer the opportunity to make new connections.

Before you neet with new connections, you will want to create a pitching strategy. This could include samples of your writing and the reasons why people should hire you instead of other people.

Make no mistake, this part takes time and energy. Many fall by the wayside, however, if you can build up enough clients you can truly become a professional freelance writer.
